San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico.

My journey begins in the state of Chiapas, Mexico on a lovely city by the name of San Cristobal de las Casas. The architecture of San Cristobal's streets and buildings takes you back in time to "New Spain," when Spain colonized the Americas. Naturally, the heart of San Cristobal de las Casas has the typical square plaza with a beautiful catholic church. You will also find stone paved, slim sidewalks and narrow streets running along the main plaza. The indigenous folklore that has inhabited this land long before the Pre-Hispanic era is truly the livelihood of San Cristobal. The architecture, the cuisine, and the hand made crafts sold by afoot merchants are a unique experience.

San Cristobal has good quality hotels where a night may average $40 dollars and dinner with your family at award winner “Tierra y Cielo” restaurant averages $30 to $40 dollars! You will not struggle to find good restaurants for a convenient price. You can find authentic Argentinian cuisine and even Italian restaurants within a few blocks from the plaza. Not to forget, San Cristobal de las casas is coffee paradise for those who love their daily caffeine.  Coffee shops are known to pour and sell their own freshly toasted coffee beans. The state of Chiapas is worldwide coffee producer and San Cristobal will not disappoint! I should mention that San Cristobal de las Casas is also known to be a safe tourists location. Tourists and locals may freely navegate the streets of San Cristobal de las Casas; in fact, I would recommend to tour exclusively by foot. During daytime you may find family friendly spots, and nightlife respectively.

Some aspects of San Cristobal de las Casas have been lost to modernization, as it continues to attract tourism from around the world (mainly Europe, Canada, and The States). Also, tourists frequently lodge in San Cristobal de las Casas to venture into less popular touristic attractions, such as marvelous river falls within the jungle, the authentic private indigenous communities, Las Lagunas de Montebello (near the Guatemalan border) or the one and only Sumidero Canon.
